Understand[ edit ] A popular destination for day hikes, camping, climbing, and horseback riding, Hocking Hills State Park and the adjacent Hocking State Forest captivate the imagination with deep gorges, waterfalls, and recess caves. A short hike to Old Man’s Cave, Ash Cave, Rock House, or Cedar Falls will make you feel like you cannot be in Ohio anymore, transporting you to a world that feels like something out of a fantasy novel. History[ edit ] The Hocking Hills received their name from the Hocking River, which passes several miles northeast of the park through the town of Logan. The river’s name came from Shawnee words that translate roughly into “bottle river”. Old Man’s Cave was named for Richard Rowe, a hermit who lived in the gorge during the mid th Century. The gorge became a scenic attraction by , and was purchased for preservation by the State of Ohio in Cottages and a dining lodge were opened in Landscape[ edit ] Southeast Ohio is covered by the foothills of the Allegheny Plateau, making the land rocky and rugged. This state park is certainly dedicated to providing access! With more than 2, acres — remarkably maintained to keep trails navigable — hikers at all levels of experience and from everywhere in the world dig their heels down, way down into a gorgeous salad of moss, fern and mushroom slathered geologic eye-candy with hemlock forests and mysterious watery gorges. Those non-reservable, walk-in sites are electrical only, as are most of the sites.
The new section — sites 24 to 70 — have full hookups. This campground is spread out over rolling hills, so some sites are more isolated while others are rather crowded. The Hocking Hills State Park was recommended as a great natural area with good hiking. The campground sits on a ridge amongst tall hardwoods, and it is isolated from the rest of the park, although you can hike to some of the main attractions. Interior roads and pads are paved, but there is very little space or privacy between sites.
The setting of the campground itself is nice, but the sites aren’t especially attractive. None used Big Rig Friendly: It’s accessible to big rigs and there are a few sites that can accommodate big rigs, but I wouldn’t call it “big rig friendly”. The sites are not particularly long and you will likely have to park a toad or tow vehicle on the grass or in the parking near the pool.

Kids, in the outdoors, break down all social restraints of man.

The campground entrance was well marked and easy to find. Internal roads were asphalt and for the most part in reasonably good condition. The road from the camp ground headquarters to the where the camp sites were located was quite narrow. Meeting another larger RV on that road would have been a white knuckle experience, especially with a drop-off on one side. The camp ground roads were maneuverable with a 36′ DP motorhome, but anything larger might have difficulty.
